How do you make your money ?

My nephew is coming to that age when he has to decide about his future career etc. I've worked in the city for about 20 years now, for banks, asset managers and hedge funds.
He wants to potentially follow my path, but I've encouraged him to look at trades too, with a view owning his own business one day.
I have a few friends that have worked very hard over the years to develop their skills and they are now reaping the rewards, so I'm using them as an example too. Other friends have done very well out of buying/selling their properties at the right time/inheritance etc, so good luck to them.

Am sure most people generally just fall into a certain line of work when young without knowing much about it.
Started work at a solicitors 27 years ago and am now at my third law firm doing Risk and it's boring as fuck.
Stuck with it now, so am hoping for an early death to escape!!

If I had the choice id go back and learn a trade out of school. In 10 years (which is a long time) you can amass the right amount of knowledge, experience and contacts to set yourself up on you're own and start something that could become very successful.
You don't get that in the financial world unless you're a qualified accountant or financial adviser etc..!
None of my pals in Kent work in the city, they've mostly got trades and are working for their old mans firms so will take over one day. Its too expensive to get in to the city from there anyway.

I'm in reinsurance in the City, but if you're not a posh cunt with a degree, there's hardly any chance of getting into it these days.

I work for a charity and run yoga retreats and teach yoga. It's taken me twenty years of working to finally do what I want to be doing, my advice to any youngster would be to get a trade. No brainer really

I'd recommend to any ypung person to have loads of technilogical knowledge as you'll be replaced by machines in tbe future.

You know him already but suppose the first port of call is he an academic, or like getting his hands dirty, or both.
Number 2, what does he enjoy doing. Are there openings in one of his interests. Be great to do a job you actually enjoy, or can relate to.
Is he money driven, what type of character is he. Mostly about longetivity.
Its a hard call if he hasn't got a job desire by now. Whatever he does probably means sticking with his choice for a few years before he knows.

I've heard that a career as an industrial washing machine salesman is quite lucrative, and you get to employ young romanian apprentices as well.

GSP.. a bit of both ! He is in all top sets etc, but he has an edge to him..
That's why I'm steering him away from a life of effectively just pushing stuff around spread sheets.. with no real tangible outcome...
I remember reading this poem a short while ago by Bukowski.. sums it up really ! Although 8.30 would be a 3 hour lay in..
"How in the hell could a man enjoy being awakened at 8:30 a.m. by an alarm clock, leap out of bed, dress, force-feed, shi*, pis*, brush teeth and hair, and fight traffic to get to a place where essentially you made lots of money for somebody else and were asked to be grateful for the opportunity to do so?"

From my experience, a trade is always the better option. I've got other tickets but it's almost always my grounding in a good apprenticeship that has helped me most when it comes to doing my job (even now, when the most "hands-on" it gets is plugging the laptop in).
But make sure it's something he enjoys, as is stated in this thread and is a recurring theme whenever this subject comes up.
I'd recommend he gets himself into a position where he can chose not to do something rather than wish he could.

I'm in the advertising business, have been sinne 1998.
Like alot of things the good days have gone but I've just started my own business so enjoying not having a boss making stupid calls and costing me money.
Depends what your mind set is, I was all about earning & advertising afforded me some lovely perks.
